Nominate Your Favourite Port Moody Businesses!

The 15th annual Spike Business Awards are given by the City of Port Moody’s Economic Development Committee, and honour outstanding local businesses in six different categories. Winners will be announced and awarded at their place of business during Small Business Week, October 18 – 24. Nominees must hold a valid 2020 business licence. A business cannot win in one particular category more than once every three years. However, they are still eligible to win in other categories.

The deadline for submissions is 5pm on Tuesday, September 29, 2020.

Arts in Business

This award celebrates a business or organization that has significantly contributed to the Port Moody’s arts community through innovative programs or partnerships, arts integration, arts advocacy, employee engagement, and/or philanthropy.

Applicants will be judged on:

  • program innovation and/or business practices in support of the arts; 
  • the extent of promoting the value of arts and culture; and 
  • the impact on both arts and culture and the community.

Business of the Year

This award celebrates a business that reaches beyond Port Moody and shows evidence of excellence in product or service innovation, revenue growth, customer service, employee engagement, and social responsibility.

Applicants will be judged on:

  • reach and growth of the business regionally, nationally, or globally; 
  • customer service and the extent of the impact on the perception and understanding of Port Moody by residents and visitors, customers, and clients; and
  • degree of an innovative product or service that helps define the business.

Environmental Leadership

This award celebrates a Port Moody business or organization that excels in environmental efforts that incorporate waste and resource reduction, energy efficiency improvements, greenhouse gas reductions, and fostering green jobs, services, and products by demonstrating successful pathways for others to follow.

Applicants will be judged on:

  • significance of impacts e.g. green job creation, waste or emission reductions, energy consumption reductions, etc.; 
  • extent of change in the business or organization’s culture; and
  • effectiveness of articulating impacts to other businesses and the community at large, or in a mentoring capacity. 

Inclusive Excellence

This award celebrates a Port Moody business or organization that has successful initiatives to create a more diverse workplace for people of all backgrounds, including women, persons with disabilities, people with mental illness, indigenous people, LGBTQ2+ people, and immigrants.

Applicants will be judged on:

  • degree to which initiative has gone above and beyond a normal effort; 
  • impact of effort on individual, business, and community; and
  • degree to which the effort is sustainable.

New Business

This award celebrates a business that has been operating in Port Moody for more than one year and less than three years that has enjoyed business success, has a clear future vision, and demonstrates excellence in management, service, and integrity.

Applicants will be judged on:

  • degree of business success in a short period of time since its existence; 
  • extent of defining a clear vision for the future success of the business including staff development; and 
  • degree of customer service.

Young Entrepreneur

This award celebrates a young entrepreneur 35 years old or under with a business in Port Moody who exemplifies entrepreneurial spirit, leadership, business success, and commitment to the community.

Applicants will be judged on:

  • the extent of entrepreneurial spirit; 
  • vision, leadership, and personal integrity; 
  • business success; and
  • social and environmental responsibility.
